Is 8W/m·K Always Better Than 5W/m·K IMS? | ChengYue

Choosing between 5W/m·K and 8W/m·K IMS is not simply a matter of selecting the higher thermal conductivity. While 8W/m·K IMS provides a more thermally conductive dielectric path, the actual thermal performance of an IMS PCB also depends on dielectric thickness, heat-transfer area, copper spreading, metal-base construction, thermal interfaces and cooling conditions. This article explains when 8W/m·K IMS provides a meaningful thermal advantage, when 5W/m·K may already be sufficient, and how engineers can select the appropriate IMS construction based on thermal resistance, electrical insulation, reliability and overall system requirements.
